Scaling means the attachment of particles to the membrane, which leads to their blockage. It is an undesirable effect that can occur during reverse osmosis. Scaling leads to a reduction of the nominal flow rate. The consequences are: an increase in energy costs, the need to clean more frequently and a shorter membrane life. Biological pollution, better known as bio-fouling, is most common in reverse osmosis. This is because the membranes cannot be disinfected with chlorine to kill the bacteria. Therefore pipelines for dosing anti-scalant, calcium carbonate and chlorine are also used.
